The Smugglers’ Notch Waterfall is one of the Notches most prominent features. Standing high over the Notch (and higher still over the valley floor) the top of this 200+ rocky waterfall (the tallest in the state) makes for a perfect viewing point for some of Vermont’s most beautiful and rugged scenery. After taking it all in, it is time to strap in to a harnessing and rope system under the supervision of our professional guides. Controlling your own rate of descent, while also backed-up by a safety rope managed by our guides, you will find plenty of personal challenge and a unique perspective of your surroundings as you descend the sheer water-cooled rock face. While not physically difficult for the average participant, this activity is sure to push your comfort zone. Not for the faint of heart! Adults and children 12 years and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
Recreational Tree Climbing

Using rock climbing and arborist’s techniques, climbing trees has become a safe and popular recreational activity for those who find beauty in the majesty of trees. By appointment.

Using horizontal tyrolean traverses, rope bridges, zip lines, rappelling and other rope techniques participants will be able to experience some of Vermont’s most unique natural environments up close and personal. The tours will take place around, above, and in some of the most scenic chasms and waterfalls in the area. Be prepared to get wet! These 2 hr. tours will be lead by professional guides using canyoneering and rock climbing techniques to position participants for an unparalleled, intimate perspective of these geologic wonders. $49 per person. Advance registration required, limited space available.

Same great Via Ferrata experience taken up a notch! For those guests that have tried and loved the beginner Via Ferrata program here is your chance to take the adventure to the next level. Guests must provide their own transportation to site. Be prepared to get wet! $64 per person. Advance registration required, limited space available.

Wearing headlamps, helmets, and harnesses participants will navigate our Via Ferrata tour and get the opportunity to see our adventure in a totally “new light”. $74 per person. Rock Climbing Instruction & Private Guiding
The Smugglers’ Notch area is rich with rock climbing opportunities for all levels of difficulty. Come try the vertical challenge of rock climbing on the local crags with our experienced guides. Harnessing, knots, managing the safety rope, and movement fundamentals will all be covered. Individualized instruction can take you to the next level. Top roping with small groups of family and friends and multi-pitch guiding for private and semi-private groups can be accommodated. We offer climbing at numerous venues throughout New England from the White Mountains to the Adirondaks as well as Massachusetts. Rates start at $240 for 1 person multi-pitch, $155 each for single non multi-pitch, small groups of three $110 per person. Larger groups can easily be arranged by appointment please inquire.

Winter Adventures
Sterling Ice Cliff
Peak Expeditions is pleased to offer a pay per climb experience on the ice cliff of Sterling Mountain at Smuggler’s Notch Resort. Just a ski lift ride away is one of the most adventurous thrills of a lifetime. Ride and ski directly to the cliff. Strap on some crampons, grab some ice axes and give ice climbing a try with our experienced staff. $9 per climb or 3 consecutive climbs for $24, equipment provided, ages 11 & older. Must have valid lift ticket, accessible by chairlift only. Ice climbing tickets can be purchased at the Base Lodge or Village Center ticket booths. Weather permitting.
Modonna Ice Canyon
Hooked on ice climbing after experiencing the Sterling Ice Cliff? The Modonna Ice Canyon is a great next step. Conveniently located adjacent to Smugglers’ Notch Modonna ski lift, the Ice Canyon offer numerous ice climbing opportunities for beginners and advanced alike. This 3-hr offering will introduce you to the equipment needed for snow, ice and mountaineering activities. You will hone your skills on progressively more difficult routes and enjoy the company of family and friends in a beautiful Vermont setting. $68 per person, ages 11 & older. This program meets in front of the Madonna/Sterling Base Lodge. Ski boots are required for this program, please visit the 3 Mountain Equipment for rentals if needed. Weather permitting.
Private Ice Instruction & Guiding
Private climbing experiences can be arranged for Smugglers Notch ice venues. Tope roping with small groups of family and friends and multi-pitch guiding for private and semi-private can be accommodated. Rates start at $275 private, $195 semi-private, small groups of three or more can be arranged for $155 per person. Please inquire.

Extreme Snowshoe / X-C Ski Adventure
Snowshoeing and X-C Skiing like its never been done before! This is a back-country experience of a lifetime. Peak Expeditions will be leading snowshoe tours through the beautiful back-country of Jay Peak. Snowshoe or X-C Ski incredible nordic trails to secret snow shelters, zip lines and rappels to get a one of a kind experience of the nordic areas around the resort. Adult $65 equipment provided, Youth ages 11-18 $52. Younger by special appointment.
Backcountry Archery Challenge
Peak Expedition’s archery program integrates the age old sport of archery with fast paced, challenge based adventure travel. It draws it’s inspiration from the Biathlon, an Olympic event in which competitors race through a cross country skiing course while stopping at designated shooting ranges to hit targets with small-bore target rifles. Peak Expedition’s clients will get to experience the thrill of cross country skiing or snowshoeing as well as negotiating a rappel for a heart pounding adventure all the while testing the steadiness of their aim with quality archery equipment. Utilizing reactive archery targets clients will partake in a series of linked initiatives that will enable them to complete this amazing course. Adult $65 equipment provided, Youth ages 11-18 $52. Avalanche Beacon Park
Have you ever thought about what it would be like to experience an avalanche? With more recreational skiers and riders traveling into the backcountry, now is the time to learn about snow safety. Anyone traveling into backcountry terrain should be carrying a transceiver and know how to use it. Peak Expeditions’ Avalanche Beacon Park is the east coasts’ only hard-wired training park. Using a series of buried transmitters and hand held receivers; participants will hone in on radio signals in order to rescue a buried ski “companion” using avalanche probes, beacon’s and shovels. Finding all the transmitters will take skill and will provide a very educational and team-oriented adventure. The Avalanche Beacon Park is also an incredible winter geo-cache park that is fun for the whole family. Adults $22, ages 5-18 $18. Weather permitting. Custom times and dates are available.
Lake Willoughby Ice Climbing
Peak Expeditions will be offering guided ice climbing at one of the Northeast’s premier ice climbing locations. Lake Willoughby is known for some of the best ice climbing in the U.S. We offer privately guided trips to this marvel by appointment only this winter. All levels from beginner to advanced will find challenge, fun and excitement at the beautiful ice walls of Lake Willoughby. $275 private, $185 semi-private, small groups of three or more can be arranged for $155 per person. Vermont Winter Waterfall Tour
Your Peak Expeditions guide will use rope elements and climbing safety gear to get you a one of a kind look at Vermont’s amazing waterfalls. Come experience a unique frozen paradise in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Tour events change depending on weather and ice conditions but may include rock and ice rappelling, climbing frozen waterfalls and traversing over falls on rope lines at heights up to 60ft. Adult $55 equipment provided, Youth ages 11-18 $45.
