Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the "Seven Summits", is truly an awesome, spectacular mountain. It is located in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border. Rising out of the African plains, this dormant, snow covered volcano presides over five ecosystems. Like many of the high peaks located near the equator, Kibo Peak’s snow fields are in a state of retreat and this unique climatic zone may not be viewed for too many more years. While not a technical peak, Kilimanjaro’s high altitude summit (Kibo Peak) demands strong physical and mental conditioning and is considered a significant mountaineering achievement. With unrivaled views of the plains far below, our route ascends a "less traveled", pristine track. Our team will climb encumbered only with day packs, giving us plenty of time to acclimatize. Our partners in Tanzania will provide porters and a local guide, affording us the opportunity to enjoy the route and travel our own pace thus increasing our potential for success. With comprehensive, high quality camp services and fine fresh foods, Kibo is an excellent, first high altitude expedition. After completing an ascent of this majestic peak, expedition members have the option of further exploring the African countryside and its people. Staying in unique ecotourism lodges run by local people, our party will have the opportunity to "photo safari" to a number of locations known for high concentrations of lion, wildebeest, zebra, elephant, and other native wildlife. It is also possible to travel to Olduvai Gorge to view the archaeological digs made famous by the Leakeys' discovery of 1.8 million year old humanoids. |
