Huascaran, Peru, advanced

Few countries in the world rival Peru in the way landscape, history, and culture come together.  The two main ranges of northern Peru, the Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash, are without a doubt the most spectacular and technically challenging of the whole Andean range.  With more than 20 main summits over 6000 meters and relatively easy access, climbing and trekking objectives of all difficulties abound.  Despite the fact that many peaks here are higher than Denali, the highest in North America, Peru's position near 9 degrees south spares mountaineers the extremely low temperatures and severe storms common at higher latitudes.

As a team we develop the trip itinerary to suit the level of skill and commitment of our members.  Possible climbs include Pisco (5752m), Huascaran (6768m), Chopicalqui (6356m), and Chinchey (6222m) north of Lima and Salcantay (6271m) in southeastern Peru near Machu Picchu.  Any of these objectives provides significant opportunities to learn or refine, and practice, mountain travel and climbing skills.

No matter what the climbing objective, we can expect to travel in extensively glaciated terrain requiring ice ax, crampons, and rope management skills.  Crevasse rescue and roped travel techniques are reviewed to help insure safe passage through snowfields, around ice towers, and while climbing moderate to steep ice slopes.  Participants are exposed to issues of high altitude physiology, high altitude mountain sickness, nutrition at altitude, evaluation of objective mountain hazards, and an introduction to glacier formation, movement, and route selection.
