We are very proud of the individuals that comprise our guiding staff.  They are full time professional guides and mountain educators of the highest quality and have dedicated themselves to a lifetime of teaching.  Our lead international guides have a minimum of ten years guiding experience and most are well into their second decade of climbing and skiing throughout the world.  We work closely with our local outfitter partners to provide you with expert support for your personal adventure.

Austin Paulson founded Peak Expeditions in 1988.  A veteran of more than 150 international mountaineering expeditions around the world with 30 years in the adventure industry, he is regarded as one of the most accomplished mountaineering authorities in the Northeastern US.  He received rock and alpine training from the American Mountain Guides Association, is a level 3 avalanche forecaster, and is trained as an Emergency Medical Technician.  Austin is a climbing instructor certification provider through the Professional Climbing Instructors Association.

Austin has been involved in the development and management of several university and college adventure programs in the Northeast.  Currently he is a Professor and Program Coordinator for the Outdoor Leadership Program in Greenfield, Massachusetts and Technical Rescue Specialist with Rescue Inc. in Brattleboro, VT.


chris photoChris Rice is our Domestic Operations Manager and has been working in the Outdoor industry since 2004. As a teenager Chris was an avid rock climber and outdoor enthusiast and has adapted his love for the outdoors into his work. Chris is a graduate of the Outdoor Leadership Program at Greenfield Community College. Chris has been on several international trips and has climbed all over the United States, in particular spending lots of time in the Cascade Mountains while living in Oregon and Washington state. Chris has certifications for rock climbing, AVI 1, Challenge Course facilitator, Wilderness First Responder and both coastal and whitewater paddling certifications. Chris also does Environmental and Adventure education courses for at risk populations throughout New England.
