Packing For Your Trip
As an experienced climber, hiker, and camper, you probably own much of the equipment in these lists. You are responsible for obtaining all of it. We strongly recommend that all your expedition gear, including both travel and climbing/trekking clothing, fit into two pieces of baggage. Consider a strong duffel-type bag for most of your clothing and gear (including your backpack, sleeping bag, etc.) and a day pack for your travel clothes and other items. Please contact your travel agent for baggage size and weight restrictions; Peak Expeditions is not responsible for excess baggage fees. Please let us know if you have any questions regarding any piece of clothing or equipment.
General Alpine Equipment
- Day pack (for city and air travel, 3,000 ci. approx.)
- Expedition pack (greater than 5,000 ci.)
- Minus 10 degree sleeping bag (with vapor barrier, if down)
- Sleeping pad (ensolite, Thermarest)
- Stuff sacks for organizing gear
- 2 insulated water bottles (min. 2 quart capacity)
- Head lamp with extra batteries and bulb
- Glacier glasses
- Ski goggles
- Sun block and high SPF sun screen
Technical Climbing Equipment
- Helmet (adjustable to be worn over hat) - Inquire about specific trips
- Adjustable climbing harness (make sure it fits over all your layers)
- Tube style belay device
- 2 Locking carabiners (pear shape best)
- 4 Non locking carabiners (oval best)
- 2 Tied shoulder length runners
- 2 Prusik loops (one shoulder length, one double length) or Micro camming devices (Tibloc, Ropeman)
- 60cm Ice ax with daisy chain (for attaching to harness)
- Crampons (Gravel Rambo best, must be 12 point)
- Adjustable trekking poles (optional)
Advanced Equipment
A detailed equipment list will be provided for our more demanding programs and expeditions. Peak Expeditions will provide, or has available for rent, technical gear such as helmets, harnesses, climbing shoes and boots, ice axes, and crampons. We will provide all group safety equipment including medical kit and rescue gear. Peak Expeditions can recommend a local specialty shop to help you prepare for your adventure. For our international expeditions, Peak Expeditions will extend wholesale prices on equipment for our clients. We do not want equipment to be a limiting factor in the success or safety of our adventures, so please inquire.
Camp Gear
- Personal first aid kit (including band aids, mole skin, cough drops, pain medication, sun burn ointment, etc.)
- Toiletries (tooth brush, wash and dry towels, hand towel, shampoo, biodegradable soap, tampons, multi-vitamins, sun block and lip block spf 45 or greater)
- Water purification system (recommend iodine crystals)
- Folding knife, spoon, bowl (2 cup Tupperware with lid recommended), insulated mug
- Tevas or like sandal (optional)
- Camera and reading material (optional)
Travel Clothing
- City/Travel Clothing
- T-shirts, Shorts
- Long sleeved shirt and long pants (at least one suitable for wear in a nice restaurant)
- Underwear and socks
- Wind breaker and warm sweater or pile
- Passport style wallet (worn around neck) or waist belt style wallet
- $250-$400 spending money (restaurants, gifts)
- Sun glasses and hat
- Climbing/Trekking Clothing
- Light weight balaclava
- Wool/Polarfleece hat
- Light weight glove liners (1 pair)
- Insulating gloves
- Glove shells
- Insulated mitten shells and liners
- Gore-tex jacket and pants, one piece suits ideal but optional
- Heavy wool or synthetic socks (2 pairs)
- Medium weight trekking boots (worn in city, approaches)
- Expedition weight long underwear (synthetic) and light weight pair
- Insulating pants and jacket (pile, synthetic)
- Down or synthetic parka (to be worn over everything)
- Gaiters
